At least I haven't felt the need to do that for many years with newer tools, but I still find it necessary to do at least a cursory review of the gerbers and drill files.It is not possible to update to Altium Designer 16 from an earlier version, a new installation is required. It used to be worse back in my OrCAD days in the 1990s, it was necessary to manually review the netlist because it was very easy to produce a netlist which didn't match the graphical schematic. Every single time, you need to review the gerbers and drill files for alignment, scaling, missing and/or extra features, etc. It is very, very easy to produce gerbers and drill files which don't represent what you see on the screen in your CAD tool. Nowadays, with storage being so vast compared to decades ago, I don't recommend omitting leading and/or trailing zeros.Īs /u/Enlightenment777 wrote, reviewing your artwork with a gerber viewer should be a mandatory step before releasing a board design.

I discovered that I was generating misaligned, inconsistently-scaled artwork myself, and none of the full service PCB shops I used ever called me out on it. Reviewing lots of artwork from different designers made me a lot more sensitive to alignment and scaling problems. Oh, the mangled artwork I saw when I was an applications engineer reviewing PCB designs of customers of my employer's chips! If you never use a no-touch service, you might have a whole career designing PCBs without ever realizing how messy your artwork is. A full-service PCB shop might accept the same artwork and manually fix alignment and scaling problems without even telling you, but the artwork needs to be 100% ready when using a no-touch service. If everything isn't lined up and scaled the same when you load it in gerbv without manually changing any scaling or offsets, then your artwork is not ready for a no-touch service like OSH Park. Also make sure that the gerbers and the drill file(s) are exported using the same origin.
